Dermaplaning in Northern Virginia

Dermaplaning in Northern Virginia and Alexandria is a gentle, non-surgical, and completely non-invasive esthetician treatment that reveals beautifully soft, smooth, younger-looking skin with a radiant glow. If you want to ramp up the wow factor for an upcoming event or simply wish for a little pick-me-up, this is the perfect treatment for you.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning gently shaves off the topmost layers of skin, removing hair and dead skin cells and reducing the look of fine lines, acne scars, and other surface-level skin imperfections. This treatment is ideal for helping combat acne scars, actinic keratosis, dull and dry skin, peach fuzz, and unwanted hair. It can also reduce the signs of sun exposure and improve the look of surface-level fine lines. Dermaplaning is a completely non-surgical procedure that is almost entirely pain-free. Furthermore, there is no downtime or aftercare required.

Dermaplaning is designed to reduce the look of surface-level imperfections, such as light acne scars. For deeper scars and blemishes, we recommend more specialized treatments, such as microdermabrasion or laser resurfacing. Be sure to discuss your treatment options with our Northern Virginia and Alexandria medical specialist before your dermaplaning procedure in the event you are eligible for an advanced procedure.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Most of our Northern Virginia and Alexandria clients are suitable candidates for dermaplaning. However, Dr. Desman does not recommend dermaplaning for people with extremely sensitive skin or who have active skin concerns or lesions on their face, including burns, active acne or cold sore outbreaks, eczema, psoriasis, or skin rashes (contact dermatitis).

Dermaplaning Procedure Details

Dermaplaning does not require anesthesia, but if you have extra-sensitive skin, our medical specialist may apply a topical numbing cream before the procedure. The dermaplaning treatment uses a special instrument called a dermatome, which is similar to an electric razor. The dermatome has a small metal blade that moves across your skin in a shaving motion. It gently shaves off the top dead layers of skin without cutting it. This removes dead skin cells, exfoliating your skin and gently resurfacing its texture.

After the procedure, we apply a soothing gel to your skin to reduce any redness, swelling, or irritation. Regardless, these side effects are generally mild and will subside in hours. Dermaplaning can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour and a half and is the perfect lunchtime treatment. However, we recommend you do not apply makeup or anything that may irritate your skin for at least 24 hours after your treatment (or as directed by a medical specialist).

We recommend consistently scheduled appointments to maintain your new, radiant look, though your skin must heal fully between appointments. Our team suggests a dermaplaning treatment every six to eight weeks or as directed by our Northern Virginia and Alexandria medical specialist.
