How to Regain That Sleek Jawline at Home and at the Plastic Surgeon’s Office

Skin laxity along the chin, neck, and jawline is a common complaint as people age. A gradual loss of collagen and elastin, the two primary structural proteins in healthy, youthful skin, causes the skin to be less resilient to the effects of time. This lack of elasticity results in sagging skin that causes a lack of demarcation between your chin and neck, leading to the characteristic “turkey neck” or jowls.

If you’re struggling with a poorly defined jawline now that you’re getting older, you are probably wondering what steps you can take to improve it. The good news is there are some straightforward ways to reshape your face and look younger, including specific movements as well as surgical and non-surgical methods.

At-Home Jawline Exercises

While you can’t totally fight aging or genetics, there are some things you can do in your spare time to improve the look of your jawline. As with all other muscles in your body, regular exercise for your jaw muscles helps build them up and give your jaw a more defined look. These three exercises are so easy, you can do them from the comfort of your couch.

1. The Jaw Jut

  • Tilt your head back and look toward the ceiling.
  • Push your lower jaw forward until you start to feel a stretch under your chin.
  • Hold this position while you slowly count to 10.
  • Relax your jaw and return your head to a neutral position.
  • Repeat this 10 times.

2. The Neck Roll

  • While standing, crane your neck until your chin is resting on your chest.
  • Slowly rotate your head to the right and hold your head in this position while you count to five.
  • Slowly rotate your head back down so that your chin is to your chest.
  • Continue to rotate your head to the left, again keeping your head in this position while you count to five.
  • Repeat this exercise for 30 seconds.

3. The Chin Slap

  • While facing forward, carefully pat your lower jaw with the back of your hand, not overly gently or firmly.
  • Repeat this motion at a constant, regular pace for 30 seconds.

Surgical Jawline Shaping

If you are looking for more effective ways to remediate advanced signs of aging, you may be exploring the benefits of surgical intervention for providing a more contoured jawline and neck. Here are two examples of surgeries that can have significant benefits in turning back time and helping you look years younger.

If a loss of elasticity has caused your face and neck skin to droop, Dr. Desman can perform a facelift to reposition the underlying muscles and remove excess, sagging skin and tissue. Whether you choose a full facelift or a mini facelift, this relatively straightforward surgery can go a long way toward rejuvenating your appearance.

Chin and Neck Liposuction

Unwanted fat deposits on your neck and under your chin can be frustrating because they can form as you age, even if you are careful about maintaining healthy body weight. During this procedure, Dr. Desman can suction out the fat deposits under your chin via a thin tube inserted into a small incision. Your result will be a smoother and tighter contour.

Non-Surgical Options

If the degree of aging you are experiencing is less pronounced, or you would prefer to avoid surgery because you can’t afford the downtime or disruption in your regular schedule, there are new ways to improve your jawline, chin, and neck area without stitches, incisions, or anesthesia. Here are details about some of these minimally invasive, zero-downtime procedures.

Having a double chin can be frustrating, especially if you are at an otherwise healthy weight. Genetically inherited submental fat can make you look older and heavier than you are. Kybella is a first-of-its-kind injectable that can destroy the fat cells under your chin, preventing them from storing fat. After a series of 15-minute, in-office Kybella injections, you will enjoy long-lasting results, provided you maintain a relatively stable weight after your procedure.

Dermal Fillers

Strategic application of dermal fillers along your lower jaw can provide more definition if your concerns are milder and you are near your goal appearance.

Which Approach Will You Take?

A consultation with Dr. Desman can help you decide whether it is best to address your concerns with surgery, minimally invasive treatments, or at-home exercises. If you’re exploring these options in greater Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, or Maryland, contact us online or call.
