What Is a Breast Revision?

A breast revision is a surgical procedure that touches up, corrects, or enhances the results of a previous chest operation. In most cases, it is performed on someone who has had implants in the past but is starting to notice issues due to leaks, sagging or deflations. Many women need a revision after around 20 to 25 years following a previous procedure, but some might need corrections after only two to three years.

Reasons to Pursue a Breast Revision

There are a few important and common reasons someone might go in for a breast revision. For instance, breast implants can deflate or rupture over time. If this happens, a woman in Alexandria or Northern Virginia could use a revision surgery to extract the old implants and receive new ones.

Similarly, issues with scar tissue might push someone to pursue a revision surgery. If the tissue surrounding a breast implant hardens abnormally, it becomes known as capsular contracture. A revision could extract this hardened tissue, reduce pain, and correct a distorted appearance.

Finally, many women use a breast revision to change the size or shape of their implants. It is common for patients to decide that they want to swap their implants for smaller or larger ones to increase their self-confidence. In some cases, someone might even choose to remove their implants entirely.

Dr. Desman can discuss these decisions with prospective patients to ensure that a breast revision aligns with their goals for their appearance.

Can You Combine a Breast Revision With Other Procedures?

In general, combining a breast revision with other cosmetic procedures can be possible. For example, mothers might decide to pursue a tummy tuck at the same time as a chest procedure, and Dr. Desman could combine these two options for ideal results. However, the most common combination of surgeries is a breast revision with a mastopexy, also known as a breast lift.

During a breast lift, Dr. Desman will reposition the nipple, areola, and central breast tissue higher on the chest wall so that the breast appears tighter and less droopy. Northern Virginia and Alexandria women might want to include a lift in their revision surgery because they notice that, over time, their breasts have started to sag or droop due to age. Additionally, having children can change one’s physique significantly.

If you are trying to decide whether to include a lift during your breast revision, Dr. Desman could assess your circumstances and offer the guidance you need.

Recovering From a Breast Revision

Returning to daily life after a breast revision is typically a longer process than after an augmentation. After removing implants or correcting scar tissue, patients should expect about five days of downtime and discomfort.

After receiving a breast revision, Alexandria or Northern Virginia patients should refrain from exercise and physical activity for at least a month. Dr. Desman can provide more specific post-op instructions after your surgery.
